Company ProfileYou could call them the IT doctors… just not to their faces.Matthew Flint and Steve Hames admit it. When it comes to IT they’re just not normal. Which is good news for their clients.SDL IT Solutions as a company is a bit like Dr Who’s Tardis… without the geek factor. Seems small, but what you get is much more than you might expect. From their modest base in Swansea this energetic duo scour markets all over the world to ease the pressure on their business clients. They return from their travels in cyberspace with top deals and rock-bottom prices for the widest imaginable range of goods. With over 50 years between them in the IT business, the pair provides a similarly vast range of IT-related services such as installation programmes and maintenance contracts. And don’t just think they mean desktop computers when they talk about IT – they also mean modern-day commercial musts such as CCTV systems, network cabling, specialist software, audio-visual boardroom gear and interactive whiteboards. Steve happily admits: “We’re not a normal IT company; we’re not just about laptops and websites. We deal with such a large variety of IT-related goods that people can come to us for the complete package. It’s not like walking into PC World. You can’t ask them to put up security cameras and install fibre optic systems, or search for a five year old part.” Matthew agrees: “We like to think of ourselves as time, as well as money, savers. Our clients know that a call to us will give them everything they might need from security cameras to time clock machines for employees to swipe in and out, database management advice to PC upgrades. In fact any hardware or software you can think of. And we will be there every step of the way to ensure the job is done to our exacting standards.” The team have hit upon a winning recipe combining computer know-how and wizardry without the geek-speak and giving growing companies just the right tools to run their businesses more smoothly and efficiently. SDL deal either directly with the business in need of IT aid or with maintenance companies contracted to those enterprises. Matthew says: “We undertake work for everything from one man bands through to big companies like Scott Tod Developments which supplies thousands of cashpoint machines across the UK. International Rectifier in Swansea is a client and, on the service side, we’re getting work in from brokers dealing with companies like British Airways, Fuji and Guinness.” He smiles and adds: “The maintenance companies looking after them come to us to get parts.” Matthew is particularly proud of the work they have done with the Swansea-based Wales Air Ambulance. He says: “We’ve just installed security cameras for them and now we’re helping to update their IT systems to improve their fundraising capabilities. In organisations like this a little IT support can have a huge impact.” And the client list goes on: schools such as St Joseph’s, St Illtyd’s and a range of comprehensives have be helped, the NHS, NHS Direct and Singleton Hospital have turned to SDL for their IT needs, not to mention Cardiff University and work for accountants and solicitors - you name it. Steve says: “If it’s got a microchip, software or optics, we can do it!” And they mean it too. Steve: “We get a lot of security work, laptops, PCs, servers, maintenance jobs, security software and virus software requests.” He’s beginning to enjoy this. “We do audio visuals for boardrooms; we do interactive whiteboards for schools. If people need advice, they can either come to us or we can go out to them and discuss their needs. If it’s a big company, we like to spend some time there to see how it runs and works.” And yes, they turn their hands to a little time travelling too. One area of their business is the maintenance and supply of IT materials that others may term obsolete. Steve says: “A lot of equipment in the bigger companies may be quite old – but we’ll search all over the world for pieces of computer equipment, switches, a server, a hard drive... any aspect of IT really. We go as far as Singapore, Europe and America to find these parts. Some can be six years old and can take some time finding. But we find it.” SDL are happy to install servers and full networks. Copiers and specialist equipment for which firms would normally go to a printer firm are also available. Long distance networking through fibre optics upgrades and installations can be overseen by SDL. Refurbished and remanufactured hardware is also a speciality – SDL promise top-end products for a fraction of the normal price. It still comes with the manufacturer’s warranty.
